Widespread Panic Announces Charlottesville Pavilion Date
Posted: Jul 26, 2010Widespread Panic announced it’s Fall tour on the heels it’s Summer tour that includes a Charlottesville Pavilion performance on September18th.
Following the release of their acclaimed 11th studio album Dirty Side Down (career high Billboard chart debut), Widespread Panic and ATO Records will release the two-disc/three-vinyl set Live In The Classic City II on September 28th. 2010 marks the ten-year anniversary of this monumental three-night run that took place on April 1-3, 2000 at the Classic Center Theater in Athens, Georgia. These recordings are also significant because they mark the first time Widespread Panic asked their fans, who are regularly permitted to record and circulate live performances, to refrain from recording these particular shows. Live In The Classic City II will mark the first time that these performances have been made available, and even heard if you weren’t there.
Live In The Classic City II includes special guests Mike Mills (R.E.M.), percussionist Arvin Scott, producer John Keane and vocalists Daniel Hutchens and Anne Richmond Boston. Chosen from the same set of dates, Live In The Classic City I was released in 2002 and went on to sell over 100,000 copies. The collection featured special guests such as Bill Berry (R.E.M.), Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones), Randall Bramblett (Traffic, Steve Winwood), Col. Bruce Hampton, and Derek Trucks (Allman Brothers). -
Nas & Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley's Distant Relatives Tour Coming to Charlottesville
Posted: Jul 19, 2010Nas & Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley’s Distant Relatives Tour will be stopping in Charlottesville on August 28th performing their newest album Distant Relatives. This collaborative studio album by American rapper Nas and Jamaican reggae artist Damian Marley was released May 18, 2010
Featuring the signature instrumentation and musicianship of Damian with the hard-hitting beats and lyrics of Nas, the album title, Distant Relatives, refers not only to the bond between the artists, but the connection to their African ancestry, which inspired the album both musically and lyrically.
Nas and Damian trace hip-hop’s roots to Africa, where the genre originated as a vital form of cultural expression and was then transported by the slave trade to the Caribbean and the American colonies. It blossomed a half century ago in the dance halls of Kingston, Jamaica, and soon migrated to the park jams and recreational centers of New York City, where the culture became known as hip-hop. This evolution forms the basis of the Distant Relatives project.
The partnership between the two artists is sure to amaze with an album encompassing 14 tracks including the highly buzzed about first singles "As We Enter" and "Strong Will Continue”. Distant Relatives was produced by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and also features several guest appearances including Lil Wayne, who appears on the track "Generation," K’NAAN on “Africa Must Wake Up” and Tribal War,” and Stephen Marley on “Leaders” and “In His Own Words.”
Nas & Damian will be appearing on David Letterman August 2nd.

Willie Nelson Raises Funds to Raise Free Hospital's Roof
Posted: Jul 13, 2010Country singer-songwriter, Willie Nelson, will be performing Saturday, July 24 at the Charlottesville Pavilion to raise money for the construction of the Patch Adams Teaching Center & Clinic, housed on 320 acres of land in West Virginia, one of the nation’s poorest states. The Clinic is based on the model presented in the 1998 Robin Williams movie “Patch Adams.” The concert intends to raise enough money to put the clinic “under roof,” that is, build only the basic structure (walls, doors, windows) before the end of this summer.
Dr. “Patch” Adams, M.D. will attend the Willie Nelson concert, and will speak about the ideals of love, compassion, and joy by which he strives to reaffirm the “care” in health care at 7:00pm prior to the show.
The Teaching Center & Clinic will provide sleeping, eating and meeting accommodations, and will host an extensive research library of over 100,000 titles. Dr. Adams says the hospital will be "funny- looking, full of surprises and magic," construction will include a school for teaching the study of joy, love and caring.
Central to Dr. Patch Adams’ vision is to treat patients beyond X-rays and laboratory tests, and instead treat the whole patient, not just the disease. For example, doctors will routinely spend 4-5 hours with patients just for initial interviews to get to really know the patient. Dr. Adams says, “A physician’s job is not merely to treat the disease, but also to treat the patient. Our hospital erases the concept of debt in the medical interaction and replace it with the concept that you belong to a community that cares about you. We wish to transform health care through the power of positive model.”
Tickets for this extraordinary event can be purchased at http://www.charlottesvillepavilion.com, 877-C-PAV-TIX (272-8849), select Crossroads and Plan 9 stores and at the downtown Charlottesville Visitor's Center. Sold-Out Sheryl Crow Benefit Concert a Success
Posted: Jun 23, 2010Sheryl Crow and Colbie Caillet performed for a sold out crowd last night at the Charlottesville Pavilion. Over 4,000 people were in attendance while supporting the Charlottesville’s Free Clinic.
The clinic provides free primary medical care, prescription medications and acute dental care for working uninsured adults and their families in the greater Charlottesville/Albemarle community. The medical care is provided by volunteer physicians and nurse practitioners, and the clinic’s on-staff nurse practitioner.
In past years, the clinic has depended on this benefit to raise a large portion of their operating budget.
Executive Director, Ericka Viccellio, comments, “This concert is the cornerstone to our yearly fund-raising efforts. Without this, we would not be able to provide all of our services and help the people in need.”
Kirby Hutto, general manager for the Charlottesville Pavilion, has witnessed the success of these benefit concerts over the years. He stated, “This is one of my favorite events to do every year. The citizens of Charlottesville are very supportive of not only music, but also the local non-profit organizations. It is incredible to see the support for this benefit year after year.”
